William Henry Lewis is defeated for reelection to the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

November 4, 1902

Lewis (R), a resident of Cambridge, lawyer and the first African-American named to the College All-American football team, had represented the fifth Middlesex District. He is defeated by Frederick Dietrick (R) by 134 votes. Due to demographic changes, gerrymandering, and divisions within the black community, Lewis is the last African-American elected to the Massachusetts legislature until 1946.* He becomes the first African-American assistant U.S. Attorney General in 1911.
